A browse list of available search terms can be consulted for all the fields in the Search page except Gender and Feast Day. All the browse lists are arranged alphabetically. To access a browse list, click the Browse button next to the relevant search box.

If you have entered a term into the search box before clicking the Browse button, the browse list will open with the nearest match to that term checked. The term entered is displayed above the browse list in the Look For... search box. For example, if you enter Martyr into the Keyword field and click the Browse button, Martyr will be carried over into the Look For... search box and the browse list will open at the relevant point with Martyr already highlighted.

If you have entered more than one term into the search box before clicking the Browse button (separated by either Boolean or Proximity operators), the last term only will be carried over into the browse list.

If you do not enter a term into the search box before clicking the Browse button, the browse list will open displaying the first 100 entries. The Look For... search box will be blank.

Once in the browse list, you can navigate using:

  • the Look For... search box. Enter the first few characters (stem) of the new term you wish to look for. Click the Look For... button and the new section of the browse list will appear with the nearest match to the stem checked.

or,

  • the Up and Down buttons. These allow you to scroll through the preceding and following sections of the browse list.
You can select as many terms as you wish within each section of entries. When the desired term or terms are checked, click OK to transfer them back to the relevant search box. Any term carried over into the browse list will be replaced by the terms selected in the browse list.

Each item transferred will be enclosed within double quotation marks. When you transfer more than one search term from a browse list to a search box, Acta Sanctorum Database automatically combines them using the Boolean operator OR.

Use the buttons on the Toolbar to navigate to a different area of Acta Sanctorum Database. The following buttons are available from the Toolbar on the Browse List page: Search All, Search Indices, BHL GoTo, Table of Contents, Marked List, Search History, More Information, Help (contextual), Lexicon, and Back.
