You can limit your search to particular elements of the data contained in Acta Sanctorum Database by selecting items from the Search Options drop-down lists on the Search All or Search Indices pages.

The Search Options apply to the whole database:

Search All

Search in:
  • All texts retrieves hits in all areas of the database.
  • All Latin hagiographical texts: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) in all Latin hagiographical texts excluding introductions, dissertations and commentaries.
  • Latin hagiographical texts pre-1500: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) in texts listed in Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina (BHL).
  • Latin hagiographical texts post-1500: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) in texts not listed in Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina (BHL).
  • Introductions, dissertations, commentaries: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the introductions, dissertations and commentaries.

The option selected by default is All Texts.

Limit to:
  • Text including Notes and Marginal Summaries: retrieves hits in all areas of the database.
  • Text excluding Notes: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) in all areas of the database excluding notes.
  • Text only: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) in all areas of the database excluding the notes, the titles, and the marginal summaries.
  • Titles and Marginal Summaries only: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the titles and marginal summaries.
  • Notes only: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the notes.

The option selected by default is Text including Notes and Mariginal Summaries.

Display search results:
  • With Context: displays search results with context.
  • Summary of Matches: displays a simplified search results.

The option selected by default is With Context.

Search Indices:

  • All indices: retrieves hits in all indices of the database.
  • Index Sanctorum: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Sanctorum. This alphabetical index of the saints covered in a specific volume provides a breakdown of the document titles and chapter headings for each of the main saints.
  • Index Chronologicus: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Chronologicus. This index provides a chronological listing of the key events covered in the current volume.
  • Index Historicus: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Historicus. This is a list of names of the historical figures who feature in the current volume, sometimes accompanied by information about them or the events with which they were concerned.
  • Index Topographicus: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Topographicus. This is a list of specific places mentioned in the volume, sometimes accompanied by a brief explanation of why they are mentioned.
  • Index Onomasticus: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Onomasticus. This is a glossary of unusual words used in the volume, accompanied by brief explanations.
  • Index Moralis: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Moralis. This is a subject index, organised alphabetically by subject or theme. It often includes detailed summaries of how the themes feature in the volume.
  • Index Onomasticum Graeco-Barbarum: searches for occurrences of your search term(s) only in the Index Onomasticum Graeco-Barbarum. This is another glossary of unusual Greek and other foreign words, with Latin explanations.
  • Miscellaneous Indices: these are indices that don't fit into the categories above; often indices to specific documents, or retrospective indices covering the whole of Acta to date. The format and content of these varies from case to case. This category also includes the Notitiae Figurarum, or lists of illustrations, which appear in some volumes.

The option selected by default is All Indices.
